QUICKSTAB AT A GLANCE

The ability to transfer energy across AC networks is hampered by thermal, voltage and stability limits. The maximum loadability of a transmission system is the state where voltages collapse and units may get out of synchronism, and is a severe constraint. The distance from a given operating point to the state of maximum loadability is called steady-state stability reserve, changes when the load, topology and voltages change, and may be quite different from values computed off-line. Its recalculation after each state estimate and load-flow solution is required because operating the system near its stability limit may lead to blackouts. This problem is solved rapidly by QuickStab®, a field-proven software used:

  • Off-line, in operations scheduling and market clearing, where stability checks are needed frequently to devise strategies aimed at preventing blackouts while facilitating the electricity business

  • In real-time, in system dispatching, to support fast yet reliable operating decisions.

Given a load-flow solution or state estimate of a multi-area power system, QuickStab®:

  • Uses a fast voltage stability technique to compute, for each area, the maximum loadability and the safe system loading for a user-defined security margin
  • Identifies generators that may cause instability and ranks the machines and tie-line injections in order of their impact on system’s stability

  • Performs bus-level analysis, shows how the generators are “seen” from that bus, and ranks the buses in the order of their stability indices.

QuickStab® can be used as a stand-alone off-line application, invoked from, or used in conjunction with, third-party load-flow programs, and seamlessly or loosely integrated with real-time SCADA/EMS network analysis applications. The program has been implemented in operations planning, real-time dispatching, market operations, and transmission planning in US, Europe, Latin America and Asia.

QuickStab® stands out in the industry because it quantifies the risk of blackout, can help develop preventative and corrective strategies, is extremely fast, makes extensive use of intuitive graphics, and can be easily integrated with third-party software. These unique features and benefits are summarized below:
